The Evolution of Technology: Machine vs. Man

If you are currently working in a factory or in a technical position, you may be worried about the future of your job. This is because as machines become more and more advanced, companies use them instead of people to do menial jobs that do not require a great deal of expertise. In today’s economy, companies are looking for ways to cut back, including utilizing any machine that can do a job that was once done by a human. Machines require maintenance but not a paycheck, so they can be a great way for companies to save money.

One of the things you can do to ensure that you do not lose your job to a machine is to make yourself more valuable to the company that you work for. Sometimes this may mean acquiring more skills, educating yourself more thoroughly about what you do, and becoming even better at your job than you were in the past. You do not necessarily have to quit your job and go back to school. But you can look around and try to determine what positions could not be done by machines. Every factory tends to have positions like these: human resource people, managers, etc. Pay attention to what these people do, learn as much as you can about how they do it, and then use any opportunity to display your new skills.

As you do this, people will notice that you have become increasingly invaluable to them, that you seem to go above and beyond your own position, and that you have a knowledge that is worth more than what a machine can perform. As you subtly and tactfully show your skills to those around you, you are more likely to be promoted, and as you are promoted you become less likely to lose your position to a machine.
